School Age Calculator

Use this calculator to determine which year group your child should enter at BIS. In Mozambique, the school year typically begins in January, and a child's age on the first day of school determines their year group placement.

Understanding School Age at BIS

At BIS, we follow the Cambridge International curriculum structure. Children's ages on the first day of the school year (typically in January in Mozambique) determine their year group placement. This ensures all children in a year group are within a similar age range.

Important: Children progress in age throughout the school year. For example, a child who is 4 years old on January 1st will turn 5 by the end of that calendar year. Similarly, a child who is 5 on January 1st will be 6 by year's end, and so on. This natural age progression means all children in a year group experience similar developmental stages together.

Deferral for Summer-Born Children

In the Mozambican context, children born between July and December (the second half of the year) may be considered for deferred entry. Parents of these "summer-born" children may choose to delay their child's school start by one year if they believe their child would benefit from additional time before beginning formal education.

If you are considering deferring your child's entry, please contact our admissions office to discuss your child's individual circumstances and readiness for school.
