Developing Independent Learners and Critical Thinkers

Our secondary program follows the Cambridge Lower Secondary and Cambridge IGCSE curricula, providing a rigorous academic pathway that prepares students for success in higher education and beyond. These crucial years see students transition from dependent learners to independent young adults who take ownership of their education, develop sophisticated thinking skills, and begin to specialize in areas that match their interests and aspirations.

The secondary program is divided into two key stages: Key Stage 3 (Cambridge Lower Secondary, Years 7-9) and Key Stage 4 (Cambridge IGCSE, Years 10-11). Throughout these five years, students develop deep subject knowledge, learn to analyze complex problems, construct well-reasoned arguments, and work independently. Our experienced teachers challenge students academically while providing the support needed to help each individual reach their potential.

Key Stage 3: Cambridge Lower Secondary (Years 7-9)

Cambridge Lower Secondary builds on the foundations established in primary school, introducing students to more specialized subject teaching and greater academic rigor. Students study a broad, balanced curriculum that develops knowledge and skills across multiple disciplines. This stage is crucial for building the strong subject foundations needed for IGCSE success.

Students have specialist teachers for each subject and begin to experience the structure of secondary education, including moving between classrooms, managing multiple teachers and subjects, and taking greater responsibility for their learning. The curriculum encourages students to make connections between subjects, think critically about what they learn, and develop their own ideas and opinions.

Lower Secondary Curriculum

All students study the following subjects in Years 7-9:

  • English - Literature, language analysis, creative and analytical writing, speaking and listening
  • Mathematics - Number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving
  • Science - Biology, chemistry, and physics taught as separate disciplines
  • Portuguese - Language development appropriate to proficiency level
  • Humanities - History and geography, developing understanding of the past and the world
  • ICT/Computer Science - Digital literacy, programming, and computational thinking
  • Physical Education - Sports, fitness, and health education
  • Arts - Visual arts, music, or drama (rotation or choice depending on year)

Lower Secondary Checkpoint

At the end of Year 9, students take Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint examinations in English, Mathematics, and Science. These internationally standardized tests provide diagnostic feedback on student strengths and areas for development, helping to inform subject choices for IGCSE and identify any support needs. Checkpoint results are reported on an international scale, allowing comparison with Cambridge students worldwide.

Key Stage 4: Cambridge IGCSE (Years 10-11)

The Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14-16 year olds. It is recognized by leading universities and employers worldwide as evidence of academic achievement. Students typically study 8-10 subjects over two years, culminating in external examinations at the end of Year 11.

IGCSE courses are rigorous and demanding, requiring students to develop deep understanding, apply knowledge to new situations, and demonstrate their learning through a variety of assessment methods. The program allows students to begin specializing while maintaining breadth in their education. Subject choices are made at the end of Year 9 in consultation with teachers, parents, and students, taking into account interests, strengths, and future aspirations.

IGCSE Subject Choices

Students select their IGCSE subjects from the following options (subject availability may vary based on student numbers and staffing):

Core Subjects (Compulsory):

  • English as a Second Language or English Literature (or both)
  • Mathematics (with option for Additional Mathematics for strong students)
  • Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics (taken as three separate subjects or Combined Science)
  • Portuguese (First Language or Foreign Language, depending on proficiency)

Elective Subjects (Choose 3-5):

  • Humanities: History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies
  • Technology: Computer Science, Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Creative Arts: Art & Design, Music, Drama
  • Additional Languages: French, Spanish (subject to demand)

Teaching and Learning Approach

Our teaching emphasizes deep understanding over memorization, critical thinking over passive learning, and application of knowledge to real-world situations. Lessons are interactive and challenging, incorporating discussion, debate, practical work, independent research, and collaborative projects. Students are expected to take notes, complete homework regularly, revise independently, and take increasing responsibility for their own learning.

Teachers differentiate instruction to meet individual needs, providing extension work for those who need additional challenge and support for those who need it. We maintain high expectations for all students while recognizing that each individual has unique strengths, interests, and learning needs.

Assessment and Examinations

Students are assessed continuously through classwork, homework, tests, and projects. Formal examinations occur at the end of each term, helping students develop exam technique and time management skills. In Years 10-11, mock examinations provide practice for the final IGCSE exams and help identify areas needing additional focus.

IGCSE examinations are externally set and marked by Cambridge, ensuring international standards and fairness. Results are graded from A* to G, with A*-C considered strong passes. Universities and employers worldwide recognize IGCSE qualifications as evidence of academic achievement and readiness for advanced study.

Academic Support and Guidance

Each student has a form tutor who monitors academic progress, provides pastoral support, and serves as the main point of contact for parents. Subject teachers are available for extra help during designated times. We provide guidance on subject selection, study skills, time management, and exam preparation. Students who need additional support receive targeted intervention, while those ready for greater challenge are provided with extension opportunities.

In Year 11, students receive guidance on post-IGCSE pathways, including advice on A Level subject choices and university requirements. We help students understand how their IGCSE choices and results will impact future options.

Beyond the Classroom

Secondary students participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities including sports teams, clubs, competitions, performances, and community service projects. These activities develop leadership, teamwork, creativity, and social skills while allowing students to pursue interests and discover new talents. Students are encouraged to take on responsibilities such as house captain, student council representative, or club leader.

Preparing for Sixth Form and University

Throughout secondary school, and especially in Years 10-11, we prepare students for the demands of Sixth Form study and eventual university admission. Students develop advanced study skills, learn to work independently, manage their time effectively, and take responsibility for their own learning. By the end of Year 11, students have strong IGCSE qualifications, well-developed academic skills, and clear understanding of their strengths and interests—ready to succeed in A Level studies and beyond.
