A Nurturing Start to School Life

Our Early Years program follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, providing a warm and nurturing environment where young learners aged 4-5 develop foundational skills through play-based learning. Reception is divided into two groups to ensure age-appropriate support and smaller class sizes, allowing our experienced teachers to give each child the individual attention they need during this crucial developmental stage.

We understand that starting school is a significant milestone for both children and parents. Our caring staff work closely with families to ensure a smooth transition, building confidence and a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Children explore, discover, and grow in a safe, stimulating, and multilingual environment where English and Portuguese are naturally integrated into daily activities.

The Seven Areas of Learning

The EYFS curriculum is organized into seven interconnected areas of learning and development. All areas are delivered through planned, purposeful play, with a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities:

Prime Areas (Foundation for Learning)

  • Communication and Language - Developing speaking, listening, and understanding skills through stories, songs, conversations, and role-play. Children learn to express themselves clearly and listen attentively to others.
  • Physical Development - Building fine and gross motor skills through outdoor play, dance, games, and activities like cutting, drawing, and manipulating objects. We emphasize healthy habits and physical confidence.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development - Learning to build positive relationships, manage feelings, develop self-confidence, and understand the importance of respect and kindness. Children learn to share, take turns, and work cooperatively.

Specific Areas (Essential Skills and Knowledge)

  • Literacy - Introducing early reading through phonics, developing writing skills, and fostering a love of books and stories. Children learn letter sounds, begin to blend words, and practice mark-making and early writing.
  • Mathematics - Exploring numbers, counting, shapes, patterns, and simple problem-solving through games, songs, and hands-on activities. Children develop number sense and mathematical thinking.
  • Understanding the World - Discovering the natural world, different cultures, communities, and basic scientific concepts. Children explore their environment, learn about living things, and develop curiosity about the world around them.
  • Expressive Arts and Design - Encouraging creativity and imagination through art, music, dance, drama, and design activities. Children explore different materials, create their own works, and express themselves through various media.

Our Play-Based Learning Approach

We believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged, curious, and having fun. Play is not just entertainment—it is the primary way young children make sense of the world, develop skills, and build knowledge. Our experienced Early Years teachers carefully plan the learning environment and activities to ensure that play is purposeful and supports development across all seven areas of learning.

Each day includes a balance of teacher-led activities (such as phonics lessons, story time, and group activities) and child-initiated play (where children choose activities based on their interests). Our indoor and outdoor learning spaces are rich with resources that encourage exploration, creativity, and problem-solving. Teachers observe children carefully, joining in their play to extend learning and challenge thinking.

A Typical Day in Reception

Our daily routine provides structure and security while allowing flexibility for children's interests and needs. A typical day includes:

  • Morning Circle Time - Greeting, calendar, weather, songs, and sharing
  • Phonics and Literacy - Daily phonics instruction and reading activities
  • Mathematics - Number work, counting, and mathematical games
  • Continuous Provision - Child-initiated play in learning areas (construction, role-play, art, sand/water, etc.)
  • Outdoor Learning - Physical play, exploration, and outdoor activities
  • Portuguese Language - Daily Portuguese instruction appropriate for age and ability
  • Story Time and Reflection - Stories, songs, and reviewing the day's learning

Observation and Assessment

We use ongoing observation and assessment to understand each child's development and plan next steps in their learning. Teachers maintain individual learning journals with photographs, samples of work, and observations. Parents receive regular updates on their child's progress and are invited to contribute observations from home. At the end of Reception, we complete the EYFS Profile, which provides a comprehensive picture of each child's development and readiness for Year 1.

Class Structure and Environment

Reception is divided into two small groups to ensure optimal adult-to-child ratios and age-appropriate support. Each group has a dedicated teacher and teaching assistant. Our bright, welcoming classrooms are organized into learning areas that encourage independence and choice. Children have access to both indoor and outdoor learning spaces throughout the day, with resources carefully selected to support all areas of development.

Partnership with Parents

We recognize that parents are children's first and most important educators. We work in close partnership with families, maintaining open communication through daily informal conversations, regular parent meetings, learning journals, and our online platform. Parents are encouraged to share information about their child's interests, achievements, and any concerns. We also offer workshops on topics such as supporting early reading and mathematics at home.

Preparing for Year 1

Throughout Reception, we gradually prepare children for the transition to Year 1 and the more formal structure of Cambridge Primary. By the end of the year, children will have developed essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as the social and emotional skills needed to thrive in primary school. We ensure a smooth transition through visits to Year 1, meeting new teachers, and gradually introducing more structured learning activities in the summer term.
