Building Strong Foundations for Lifelong Learning

Our Primary program follows the Cambridge Primary curriculum, providing a rigorous and well-rounded education from Reception through Year 6. These formative years are crucial for developing strong academic foundations, essential learning skills, and positive attitudes toward education. Cambridge Primary is recognized worldwide for its high standards and focus on developing deep understanding rather than rote memorization.

Students progress through three distinct stages: Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception), Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2), and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). Each stage builds systematically on previous learning while introducing new concepts and skills. Our experienced teachers create engaging, interactive lessons that challenge students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and develop independence as learners.

The Cambridge Primary Curriculum

Our curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring students receive a comprehensive education that develops the whole child. We follow Cambridge Primary frameworks for core subjects while enriching the program with additional subjects that reflect our international context and commitment to bilingual education.

Core Cambridge Subjects

  • English - Comprehensive language development including reading (phonics, comprehension, literature), writing (composition, grammar, spelling), speaking, and listening. Students engage with a wide range of texts and develop strong communication skills.
  • Mathematics - Building number sense, mastering calculation methods, exploring geometry and measurement, understanding statistics and probability, and developing problem-solving strategies. We emphasize mathematical reasoning and real-world applications.
  • Science - Investigating biology, chemistry, and physics through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning. Students develop scientific thinking, learn to ask questions, make predictions, conduct investigations, and draw evidence-based conclusions.

Additional Subjects

  • Portuguese - Daily Portuguese language instruction tailored to students' proficiency levels, developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. We support both native speakers and those learning Portuguese as an additional language.
  • Humanities - Exploring history, geography, and social studies to develop understanding of the world, different cultures, and how societies function. Students learn about Mozambican history and culture alongside global topics.
  • Creative Arts - Visual arts, music, and drama provide opportunities for creative expression, cultural appreciation, and skill development. Students explore different artistic media, learn about artists and composers, and create their own works.
  • Physical Education - Developing physical skills, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship through games, sports, dance, and athletics. We emphasize participation, effort, and healthy lifestyles.
  • ICT and Computing - Building digital literacy, learning to use technology responsibly and effectively, and developing computational thinking and basic coding skills appropriate for each age group.

Our Teaching Approach

We employ a variety of teaching methods to engage different learning styles and ensure all students can access the curriculum. Lessons are interactive, incorporating group work, hands-on activities, technology, and real-world connections. Teachers differentiate instruction to meet individual needs, providing support for those who need it and extension activities for those ready for greater challenge.

We foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and persist in the face of difficulty. Students are taught to be active learners who ask questions, think critically, and take responsibility for their own progress. Homework is set regularly to reinforce classroom learning and develop independent study skills.

Key Stages of Development

Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2, Ages 5-7)

In Key Stage 1, students transition from play-based learning to more structured lessons while maintaining a focus on active, engaging learning. They master fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, including phonics, reading fluency, basic calculation, and number facts. Students develop independence, learn to work collaboratively, and begin to take responsibility for their learning. The curriculum is delivered through themes and topics that make learning meaningful and connected.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6, Ages 7-11)

Key Stage 2 builds on earlier foundations, introducing more complex concepts and expecting greater independence. Students develop advanced literacy skills including comprehension strategies, persuasive writing, and literary analysis. In mathematics, they tackle fractions, decimals, percentages, and multi-step problems. Science investigations become more sophisticated, and students learn to design experiments and analyze data. By Year 6, students are well-prepared, confident learners ready for the challenges of secondary education.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

We use a combination of formative and summative assessment to monitor student progress and inform teaching. Teachers assess students continuously through observation, questioning, and review of work. Formal assessments occur at key points throughout the year, providing data on student achievement and identifying areas for support or extension.

Parents receive detailed written reports twice per year and have opportunities for parent-teacher conferences to discuss their child's progress, strengths, and areas for development. We maintain open communication with families and encourage parents to support learning at home.

Cambridge Primary Checkpoint

At the end of Year 6, students take Cambridge Primary Checkpoint examinations in English, Mathematics, and Science. These internationally standardized tests provide valuable feedback on student achievement compared to Cambridge students worldwide. Checkpoint results help identify strengths and areas for development as students prepare for secondary education. The examinations also familiarize students with formal testing procedures, building confidence for future IGCSE and A Level examinations.

Class Structure and Learning Environment

Primary classes are kept small to ensure personalized attention and support for every student. Each class has a dedicated form teacher who teaches most subjects and knows each child well. Specialist teachers may deliver certain subjects such as Portuguese, PE, or Music. Classrooms are bright, well-resourced learning spaces with displays of student work, learning resources, and age-appropriate technology. We also make use of outdoor spaces, the library, computer lab, and science resources.

Beyond the Classroom

Learning extends beyond the classroom through educational trips, visiting speakers, special events, and extracurricular activities. Students participate in house competitions, sports days, performances, and celebrations of learning. We offer a range of after-school clubs that allow students to explore interests, develop talents, and build friendships. Community service and environmental projects help students understand their role as responsible citizens.

Preparing for Secondary School

Throughout primary school, and especially in Year 6, we prepare students for the transition to secondary education. Students develop organizational skills, learn to manage multiple subjects and teachers, and build independence in their learning. Year 6 students have opportunities to visit secondary classrooms, meet secondary teachers, and participate in transition activities. By the time they complete primary school, students are confident, capable learners ready to thrive in the secondary program.
