Language Learning at BIS

Language education is central to the BIS experience. Our students develop proficiency in both English and Portuguese, with opportunities to study additional languages. This multilingual approach prepares students for success in our interconnected world.

English

English is the primary language of instruction from day one. Students are immersed in an English-speaking environment, developing fluency through daily use across all subjects. We offer English as a Second Language (ESL) support for students who need additional help. By the time students reach secondary school, most are fully proficient in academic English.

Portuguese

Portuguese is taught as a subject throughout the school, meeting Mozambican national requirements. Students can take Cambridge IGCSE Portuguese (First Language or Foreign Language) and Cambridge A Level Portuguese. Our goal is to develop students who are truly bilingual, able to function academically and professionally in both English and Portuguese.

Additional Languages

Depending on student interest and staff availability, we may offer instruction in other languages such as French, Spanish, or others. Students can also pursue independent language study with teacher support.

Cambridge Language Qualifications

Students can earn Cambridge qualifications in multiple languages:

  • IGCSE English as a Second Language / English Literature
  • IGCSE Portuguese (First Language or Foreign Language)
  • A Level English Language / English Literature
  • A Level Portuguese

Benefits of Bilingualism

Research shows that bilingual individuals have cognitive advantages including enhanced problem-solving skills, greater mental flexibility, and improved memory. Our bilingual program prepares students for university and careers in multiple countries and contexts.

Language Support

We provide targeted support for students at all language proficiency levels. Whether a student is new to English or Portuguese, or looking to achieve advanced proficiency, our teachers provide differentiated instruction to meet individual needs.
