The Gold Standard for University Preparation

Our Sixth Form program offers Cambridge International AS and A Levels, widely regarded as the gold standard qualification for university admission worldwide. These advanced qualifications are specifically designed to prepare students for the rigors of university study, developing the deep subject knowledge, independent learning skills, and critical thinking abilities that universities value most. Students typically study 3-4 subjects in depth over two years, becoming specialists in their chosen fields while developing the maturity and self-direction needed for higher education success.

Sixth Form represents a significant transition from secondary school. Students are treated as young adults, with greater freedom and responsibility. The learning environment is more like university, with independent study periods, research projects, and expectations for self-motivated learning. Our experienced teachers act as subject specialists and mentors, guiding students to achieve their academic potential while supporting their personal development and university aspirations.

Programme Structure

The Sixth Form program is divided into two years, with qualifications awarded at the end of each year:

Year 12: AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary)

In Year 12, students study their chosen subjects at AS Level, which represents the first half of the full A Level course. AS Level builds on IGCSE knowledge, introducing more advanced concepts, greater depth of study, and higher-level thinking skills. Students typically begin with 4 subjects, though some may take 3 or 5 depending on their strengths and university goals. AS Level examinations occur at the end of Year 12, and results are reported separately, though they also contribute to the final A Level grade.

Year 12 is a crucial year for developing independent study skills, time management, and research abilities. Students learn to take comprehensive notes, conduct independent reading, manage multiple deadlines, and take responsibility for their own learning. They also begin the university research and application process, exploring potential courses and institutions.

Year 13: A Level (Advanced Level)

In Year 13, students continue with 3-4 subjects to full A Level, completing the second half of the course which covers more advanced content and requires greater sophistication in thinking and application. A Level examinations at the end of Year 13 assess the entire two-year course. Students must demonstrate mastery of their subjects, ability to analyze complex problems, construct sophisticated arguments, and apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations. A Level results are graded from A* to E, with A*-B considered strong grades for competitive university courses.

Year 13 is intense and demanding, with students balancing A Level studies, university applications, entrance exams (if required), and preparation for independent life. Our staff provide comprehensive support throughout this process, helping students manage stress, maintain focus, and achieve their goals.

Available A Level Subjects

We offer a range of A Level subjects, with availability depending on student demand and staffing. Students choose subjects based on their interests, strengths, and university course requirements. Common subject combinations include sciences for medicine/engineering, humanities for law/social sciences, and mixed combinations for flexibility.

Subject Offerings

  • Mathematics - Pure mathematics, mechanics, and statistics. Essential for STEM degrees and many other university courses. Further Mathematics available for exceptional students.
  • Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Rigorous courses covering advanced scientific concepts, practical skills, and research methods. Required for medicine, engineering, and science degrees.
  • Languages - English Language, English Literature, Portuguese. Developing advanced language analysis, literary criticism, and communication skills.
  • Humanities - History, Geography, Economics. Exploring complex historical events, geographical systems, and economic theories. Developing research, analysis, and essay-writing skills.

Choosing the Right Subjects

Subject choice is one of the most important decisions students make, as it affects university options and future career paths. We provide extensive guidance to help students choose wisely. Key considerations include: university course requirements (e.g., sciences for medicine, mathematics for engineering), personal strengths and interests, career aspirations, and maintaining a balanced combination. Students should research university requirements early and choose subjects they genuinely enjoy and excel in, as A Level success requires sustained effort and genuine interest.

Teaching and Learning at A Level

A Level teaching is rigorous and intellectually demanding. Lessons involve lectures, seminars, discussions, debates, practical work, and independent research. Students are expected to read widely beyond the textbook, engage critically with ideas, formulate their own arguments, and take responsibility for their learning. Teachers provide expert subject knowledge, challenge students' thinking, and guide independent study, but students must be self-motivated and proactive.

Independent study is crucial at A Level. Students have designated study periods for private reading, research, essay writing, and revision. Effective use of this time is essential for success. We teach study skills, time management, and research methods to help students become effective independent learners.

Assessment and Examinations

A Level assessment is primarily through final examinations, though some subjects include coursework or practical assessments. Students sit AS examinations at the end of Year 12 and A Level examinations at the end of Year 13. We prepare students thoroughly through regular testing, mock examinations, past paper practice, and exam technique training. Mock exams in Year 13 are particularly important, providing predicted grades for university applications and identifying areas needing additional focus.

Comprehensive University Guidance

We provide extensive support for the university application process, which begins in Year 12 and intensifies in Year 13. Our guidance includes:

  • University Research - Exploring courses, institutions, entry requirements, and career pathways
  • Application Support - Completing UCAS (UK), Common App (USA), or other application systems
  • Personal Statement Writing - Crafting compelling personal statements that showcase strengths and motivations
  • Interview Preparation - Practice interviews and guidance for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, and other competitive courses
  • Entrance Exam Preparation - Support for BMAT, UCAT, SAT, and other entrance tests
  • Reference Writing - Strong academic references from teachers who know students well
  • Financial Aid - Information about scholarships, bursaries, and financial support

Global Recognition and University Destinations

Cambridge International A Levels are recognized and valued by universities worldwide, including top institutions in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, and beyond. They are considered equivalent to or exceeding national qualifications in many countries. UK universities particularly value A Levels as they are designed specifically for the British system. US universities recognize A Levels for both admission and advanced standing (credit). Many European universities accept A Levels for English-taught programs.

BIS graduates have successfully gained admission to prestigious universities globally, including institutions in the UK (Russell Group universities), USA (including Ivy League), Portugal, South Africa, and other countries. Our students pursue diverse fields including medicine, engineering, business, law, sciences, humanities, and arts.

Sixth Form Life and Leadership

Sixth Form students are leaders in the school community, serving as role models for younger students and taking on significant responsibilities. They may become house captains, head students, club leaders, or mentors. Sixth Formers have their own common room and greater privileges, reflecting their maturity and status. They participate in enrichment activities, community service, and events that develop leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility.

Preparing for University and Beyond

By the end of Sixth Form, students are well-prepared for university life and independent adulthood. They have developed advanced academic skills, intellectual curiosity, self-discipline, and resilience. They understand how to manage their time, work independently, think critically, and pursue their goals. Most importantly, they have discovered their passions and developed the knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen fields. Our graduates leave BIS as confident, capable young adults ready to thrive at university and make positive contributions to the world.
